About us
Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Cheek donated land for the construction of Hunter's Chapel A.M.E. Church on February 23, 1878. After seven years of planning and hard work, the church was built in 1885. The first church was located on Washington Street Extension, which is currently known as Hunter's Chapel A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Reverend George Hunter was our first pastor and the trustees were:

Mr. Ned Stroud Mr. Pleasant Holt Mr. Albert Albright
Mr. Joe Morrow Mr. Henry Oldham Mr. George Mebane
Mr. Frank Oldham Mr. W.S. Morrow Mr. Jasper McDade
Mr. Benjamin Walker Mr. Jasper White

The trustees purchased land from Mr. and Mrs. Ned (Jane) Stroud, December 12, 1911, in the amount of $50.00 to construct a church on Buckhorn Road, which is our current location. As the church continued to grow, a second church was constructed in 1919, under the leadership of our then Pastor, Reverend G.S. Gant.

In 1967, under the leadership of Reverend S. G. Thompkins, we continued to uplift and glorify God’s house with major renovations and the additions of rooms. Under the leadership of Reverend John D. Burton the pastor's study was added to the church along with the pavement of the church parking lot, the purchase of new pews and new carpet. In 2011, under the leadership of Reverend Vernell McAdoo, renovations to the Sanctuary and roof of the church were constructed.

Simple but pure belief in God and His almighty power and wisdom brought us together and that same faith sustains us today as we celebrate 141 years. It is the prayer of those who live the current history of this church that God will use in such a manner as to make Hunter's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church a place of salvation, comfort, and charity for all of those whom it reaches. May our faith be sufficient to merit God's continued grace.
